Despite 29 points from Hanna, Mules drop first game

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Despite a game-high 29 points from point guard Matt Hanna, the Colby College men's basketball team fell 80-77 to the host school in the title game of the University of California at Santa Cruz Invitational on Sunday at Kaiser Permanente Arena.
By the numbers
* Hanna (pictured) was 11-for-21 from the field, hit four 3-point shots, and had three assists for the Mules (4-1 overall).
* Sam Jefferson added 14 points and five rebounds, while, Ronan Schwarz had 13 points and eight rebounds. Sean Gilmore was 8-for-12 from the foul line and had 12 points, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two assists. Noah Tyson finished with seven rebounds and four assists.
* Sam Gabbard had 21 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists for UC Santa Cruz (3-2 overall). Will Crain added 11 points and nine rebounds. 
* Both teams shot 44 percent from the field and Colby had a slight 18-16 margin in free throws. UC Santa Cruz helped its cause with a 44-35 rebounding advantage.
Game highlights
* The Mules had early leads of 16-10 and 23-18 in the opening half, but the Banana Slugs chipped away and took a 41-39 margin into the second half.
* UC Santa Cruz pulled away in the second half and led 73-65 at one point. Schwarz hit a jumper and two free throws to cut the margin to 73-69, while Hanna nailed a 3-point shot with 2:51 remaining to cut the lead to 73-72. 
* The Banana Slugs never relinquished the lead and went up 79-75. Schwarz scored with nine seconds left to make it 79-77. UC Santa Cruz went 1-for-2 from the foul line with seven seconds to play. The Mules missed a long 3-point shot at the buzzer.

* The Mules play a non-conference game Thursday at 7 p.m. at Bowdoin College.
