Men's hockey pulls off upset of fifth-ranked Trinity

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sean Lawrence stopped 46 shots and Nick O'Connor played a part in all three goals for the Colby College men's hockey team in a 3-0 shutout of fifth-ranked Trinity College on Saturday night at Alfond Rink.

The Mules (11-10 overall, 8-7 NESCAC) pick up a big victory heading into Sunday's 3 p.m. home game with Wesleyan University. Trinity, which plays Sunday at Bowdoin College at 3 p.m., drops to 15-4-2 overall and 12-2-1 in the league.
By the numbers
* The Bantams had last been shut out in the final game of the 2015-16 season in a 4-0 loss to University of Massachusetts at Boston in an NCAA first round game. Trinity had not been blanked in a regular season game since falling 2-0 to Stonehill on Dec. 5, 2013.
* Trinity had come into Saturday with a nine-game winning streak. The Bantams are the defending NESCAC champions and played in the national championship game last year.
* Lawrence had 20 of his 46 saves in the opening period. He earned his second shutout of the season.
* Trinity goalie Alex Morin stopped 25 shots.
Game highlights
* The Mules scored the game-winning goal with 2:06 left in the opening period on one of the nicest goals of the season. After an errant shot by Trinity, Colby went into transition mode as JP Schuhlen carried the puck up the right boards. As he crossed Trinity's blue line, he quickly go the puck to O'Connor, who had a backhand pass to Kienan Scott for the tap in goal.
* The Mules scored their first shorthanded goal of the year at 4:01 of the third period after a Trinity giveaway in its own zone. O'Connor skated up the right boards and came in on net. O'Connor looked over at Scott, but ripped a wrist shot to the glove side and high.
* O'Connor picked off a clearing pass and one-timed a shot in the upper right part of the goal for an empty net goal.
