Owls pull away from tight game to defeat men's lacrosse

KEENE, N.H. -- The Colby College men's lacrosse team trailed by just one goal with four minutes left in the opening half, but Keene State went on a scoring run to take control in a 17-10 non-conference win on Wednesday night.

The Mules are 1-6 overall heading into Saturday's 1 p.m. game at Wesleyan University. Keene State, ranked ninth in New England, improved to 4-3.

Colby never led in the game, but had three ties in the first 17:49 of the contest. The Owls led 6-3 before the Mules received goals from Don Vivian off an assist from C.J. Hassan and an unassisted goal from Tucker Dietrick to cut the margin to one goal.

Keene State went on a 9-0 scoring run over three quarters to pull away. The Owls went up 8-5 after a quarter, scored the only three goals of the third quarter, and tallied for four goals in the first 3:38 of the fourth quarter. 

Colby goalie C.J. Layton stopped a collegiate-high 21 shots in 56 minutes, 58 seconds, including 14 saves in the second half. Payton Fales played the final 3:02 of the game. Layton has made 105 saves to average 15 stops per game.

Kevin Seiler and Lane Kadish both had two goals to lead Colby's offense. Austin Sayre added one goal and two assists to get team-leading point total up to 19 (16 goals, 3 assists). Hassan had one goal and one assist. 

Teddy Fenton scored his first collegiate goal for Colby. Myles Smith, Vivian, and Dietrick had the other goals. Mason Brady (pictured) had his first collegiate assist and Cillian Connor also had an assist.

Tyler Reilly led the Owls with five goals and one assist, while teammate Hunter Arnold scored four goals and had one assist.

Brad McCarthy, John Pappas, and Dietrick all had three ground balls for the Mules. Hassan, Joe Anile, and Taylor Haberstock had two ground balls and one caused turnover.
