Warterville, Maine - With the clock ticking down, sophomore forward Lexi Cafiero rocketed a shot to the back of the net to lead the Colby Women's Ice Hockey team past the defending NESCAC Champions Williams College by a score of 2-1.
The Mules seemed to have the offensive pressure from the start, with the Ephs unable to get their first shot on goal until the eight-minute mark of the first period. "We came out fast and tried setting the tone early,'' said head coach Holley Tyng. The Ephs were able to gain control with a power play goal scored at 7:24 of the second period. Maddie Tix, the Ephs captain, poked a rebound past Mule goaltender Nina Prünster (25 saves). That would be the only goal scored by the Ephs as Prunster shut it down between the pipes for the Mules thereafter.
Finding themselves down halfway through the third, Colby first year forward Cindy Giandomenico (photo inset) tied the game when she took a break away and beat the Eph goaltender Chloe Heiting (34 saves) high stick side. The goal was assisted by McKinley Karpa and Izzy Tegtmeyer. With 26 seconds remaining, Cafiero sent the crowd in Alfond Rink home with a great memory and excitement to start the 2019-2020 season.
"I was impressed with the players grit and discipline against a very strong opponent," continued Tyng. "Nina was outstanding in net and it was really fun to see us knock a couple in late in the third."
Colby is back in action Saturday to finish the home weekend against Williams. The puck drops at 3:00 PM.
