Waterville, Maine – Colby Volleyball started its season at home with a trimatch against visiting teams Suffolk University and Salem St. University. Colby split the day, losing a close five-set match to Suffolk before earning their first win of the season with a decisive three-set victory over Salem St.
Colby began the day against the Suffolk University Rams. The Rams jumped to an early lead, taking the first set of the match 25-11 before the Mules charged back, earning a second set victory, 25-22. The close play would define the next two sets, with the Rams and Mules again trading blows, each taking a set 25-22. However, in the deciding fifth set, Suffolk used an early run to take a 9-4 lead and never looked back, ultimately earning a 15-7 set victory to secure a 3-2 win over the Mules.
Colby bounced back quickly in their second match of the day, this time against the Salem St. Vikings. The Mules jumped to a 6-1 lead in the first set before the Vikings used a run of their own to tie the game at 15. Colby continued to press, however, and outplayed the Vikings in the final stages of the first set to win 25-20 and take a 1-0 lead.
The Mules continued their momentum in the second set, earning a lead after the third point that they would never relinquish. Consistent play on defense and heavy hitting helped them take a 25-19 second set victory and a 2-0 lead into the third.
Colby again started strong, jumping to a 5-0 lead before play evened. Although Salem St. clawed their way back and nearly tied the third set at 18, the Mules used strong play to close out the match and earn a 25-21 third set victory. Nicole Petherbridge led the Mules with nine kills and a .333 kill percentage, while Morgan Selby's contributed on both sides of the ball, totaling 21 assists and adding 11 digs to lead the Mules.
The Mules, who are 1-1 on the season after their 3-0 victory over Salem St., next take on St. Joseph's at home on Tuesday, September 10th at 7:00 PM (EST).
